Prince Philip: The longest-serving consort of a British monarch in history

Prince Philip was born on the island of Corfu in Greece, on June 10, 1921. A member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families. A turbulent early life On September 22, 1922, Philip's uncle, King Constantine I of Greece, was forced to abdicate the throne. Philip's family move to France, where his mother was eventually admitted to a psychiatric institution. When he was 18 he met 13 year old Princess (later Queen) Elizabeth. They were engaged in 1947 and married on November 20th of that year. Before they married he was created His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, but was not given the title of Prince until 1957. Philip has four children with Elizabeth: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. On 4 May 2017, the Palace announced that Prince Philip would be retiring from royal duties and visits in the fall.
