Stephen Hawking is encouraging the world’s space agencies to get very serious about finding another planet for humans to call home.

According to the BBC, during his recent address at the Starmus Festival in Norway, he noted that our time here is limited, as the climate is changing and resources are being exhausted.
Hawking said, “…the only places to go to are other worlds. It is time to explore other solar systems. Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth."
Of course, at this time there is no known alternative planet capable of supporting life. While we look for one, Hawking suggests that we make the best of what is available and figure out how human survival on the moon or even Mars is possible.
Once colonization is a reality, humanity, he says, would be well advised to pack up a bevy of living things, from animals to planet, and get to work creating hospitable environments elsewhere.
As a timeline, Hawking suggests the establishment of a lunar outpost within 30 years, and a Martian one in no more than 50.
