Massive Fire Rages at Pemex Oil Refinery in Salina Cruz

A huge column of smoke billowed from Mexican state oil producer Pemex’s largest oil refinery, located in south Oaxaca province, after an oil spill reportedly sparked a fire on Wednesday morning, June 14.Pemex tweeted that the fire started near the pump house at the Antonio Dovalí refinery, in the coastal town of Salina Cruz. Initial reports citing a spokesman said that there had been no known deaths or injuries in the blaze.Locals shared images of the black smoke and flames rising from the refinery on social media.The fire occurred a day after Pemex temporarily suspended operations and evacuated employees from the Salina Cruz refinery due to heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Calvin.
