With Scars Comes Strength: Monica Canilao

In this episode of the What’s Underneath Project, the artist Monica Canilao explains how having a father who was in and out of jail and never at home lead to a constant struggle with abusive energy. When one relationship turned verbally and mentally abusive, Monica began to cut her wrists, hoping that her boyfriend would find the scars and realize how much he was hurting her. “I used to be very conscious about my cutting scars, but now I own them,” Monica reflects. “They're a piece of me and I’m stronger by them.”
