Brazilian President Denies Resignation Rumors Amid Corruption Scandal

Brazilian president Michel Temer said he won’t resign, denying rumors that spread in the country on Thursday, May 18. A corruption scandal involving Temer was revealed on Wednesday, sparking protests demanding his resignation.“I wont resign. I repeat: I won’t resign,” Temer said in a national address. “I demand full and very quick investigation to give explanations to the Brazilian people.”Hours before, news organizations reported that Temer was going to resign on Thursday night.The address came one day after O Globo said two businessmen recorded the president allegedly approving payments to buy the silence of former lower house Speaker Eduardo Cunha with prosecutors. Cunha, who led the impeachment process against President Dilma Rousseff, was convicted of corruption, money laundering and tax evasion in March.Cunha faces further charges relating to the Operation Car Wash investigation that has linked alleged illegal payments made by state-owned oil company Petrobras to dozens of high profile Brazilian politicians.
