MEMPHIS — A well-known local musician in Memphis has lit the internet on fire, after dousing himself in kerosene and sparking a suicide attempt, a scene he decided to broadcast on Facebook Live for the world to watch.

On May 13 just past midnight, Jared McLemore began streaming a live feed of himself in a parking lot outside a bar his ex-girlfriend, Alyssa Moore, was working at. In the video, McLemore can be seen pouring a can of kerosene over his entire body. He then reportedly ran over to the bar and tried to get within reach of Moore, mumbling a goodbye before torching himself. Bar patrons could only stand back and witness the horrifying scene, until a bartender used an extinguisher to douse the flames.

McLemore later died in hospital as a result of severe self-inflicted burns. Another man suffered second-degree burns from the fireball, after attempting to kick the lighter out of McLemore’s hands seconds before he sparked it.

In a statement, McLemore’s family claims he’d been battling bipolar disorder for 19 years. This was his final post on Facebook. The day prior to his death, McLemore had been charged with domestic assault, the latest in a string of attacks and death threats that caused Moore to file a restraining order against him. The night of McLemore’s suicide happened to be Moore’s first shift back to work after breaking up with him.

The traumatic video remained online for six hours before being removed by Facebook.
