Texas Governor Signs Law Against 'Sanctuary Cities'

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on May 7 signed a law that would ban “sanctuary cities” in the state. The new law allows law enforcement and local government officials to ask about the immigration status of people they arrest or detain, and requires them to work with federal authorities on enforcing immigration laws. Those who don’t comply would face criminal penalties or would lose state funding. The bill was passed in the Texas Legislature on May 3. Texas currently does not have any “sanctuary cities,” an unofficial term for local governments that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials, NBC reported.Democrats opposed the bill, warning it was discriminatory against Latin Americans, while Republicans said it would help federal agencies tackle violent crimes committed by illegal migrants.
