President Trump’s election win may have led to the decline and forthcoming closure of a formerly popular restaurant.
High-end Japanese restaurant Koi recently announced that it will no longer be operating its location in New York’s Trump Soho Hotel.
As the restaurant group’s general counsel Suzanne Chou told Grub Street, “Obviously, the restaurant is closing because business is down. I don’t think anyone would volunteer to close a business if they were making money. Beyond that, I would prefer not to speculate as to why, but obviously since the election it’s gone down.”
Meanwhile, Jonathan Grullon, a staff member who works at the location has been quoted as saying, “Before Trump won we were doing great. There were a lot of people we had, our regulars, who’d go to the hotel but are not affiliated with Trump. And they were saying if he wins, we are not coming here anymore.”
According to a state government website, the restaurant’s official closure on June 19 will affect 85 employees.
Despite the impending shutdown at the Trump hotel, Koi Group reportedly hopes to open a new outpost somewhere else in Manhattan.
Meanwhile, CNN Money reports the other Koi location in Manhattan is said to be still doing well.
