Pink diamond sells for a world record $71.2M

A dazzling 59.6 carat diamond sold for a record $71.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction house. The jewel, known as the Pink Star, is the largest pink diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America. It surpassed the $60 million pre-sale estimate when Hong Kong jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook won the auction. The previous record was set by the Oppenheimer Blue The Pink Star was mined in Africa in 1999 and was a raw 132.5 carat gem that took two years to shape.
