These GMO Apples Won’t Turn Brown

by Jonathan SangerApples genetically modified not to brown will soon be hitting grocery stories. Okanagan Specialty Fruits will begin selling the pre-sliced apples in just 10 undisclosed stores in the Midwest in February and March. A gene in the fruit was tweaked and they will not require any chemical treatment to prevent browning when they are exposed to air. The current crop is Golden Delicious, but the company plans to sell modified modify Fuji and Granny Smith as well. The apples have been met with resistance from various anti-GMO groups, but the USDA declared that they were safe and approved them for sale in 2015.
