Senator John McCain Reportedly Forwarded Dossier Regarding Trump And Russia To FBI

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the FBI is in possession of unverified documents that suggest Russia is holding compromising information about Donald Trump. Both The Guardian and CNN report that Senator John McCain was involved in delivering that dossier which has not been confirmed.

According to The Guardian, it was given to FBI Director James Comey on December 9.  
The news outlet also notes that McCain’s decision to pass the information along was reportedly not rooted in it being proven as fact, but was motivated by the stellar reputation of the individual who had gathered it.
CNN reports that the FBI was already in possession of similar documents, but those provided by McCain covered a longer, and more recent, period of time. 
While a number of news outlets declined to publish contents of the unsubstantiated report, on Tuesday evening, BuzzFeed News made it public. 
Former intelligence personnel who spoke with WIRED on the matter expressed the importance of exercising caution in deciding whether to believe or discard the claims made. 
Matt Tait, who once worked with Britain’s GCHQ agency, commented, “it’s really hard to tell whether any of the info is actually true, or just a very exciting and expensively produced fan-fiction novel.”
