Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), an unlucky businessman, teams up with geologist Michael Acosta (Édgar Ramírez) to find gold deep in the uncharted jungles of Indonesia (Borneo).
This film went though several different Directors before settling in on Stephen Gaghan. Paul Haggis was the original Director who ended up passing in favor for other projects. Then Michael Mann was set to Direct and even bought the rights to the script. Bunt Mann dropped out of the director chair when he decided to head up Blackhat instead. And, the final potential Director said to be attached to the film was Spike Lee, but he was eventually replaced by Gaghan.
Gold was originally scheduled to open wide on December 25, 2016, it was pushed back to opening wide on January 27, with the December 25 release staying a limited release in order to qualify for awards. This limited release sort of worked as the film has received a Golden Globe Award nomination for its original song, "Gold" (spoiler alert...it did not win).
