Fisherman hooks 3,000-pound great white shark off South Carolina

HILTON HEAD, SOUTH CAROLINA — A fisherman who routinely catches and releases sharks had the experience of a lifetime after hooking not one, but two of the great predators in a single day.

The Island Packet reports that after setting off near the Hilton Head coast in South Carolina on Tuesday, Captain Chip Michalove and his two-person crew hooked a female great white shark weighing an estimated 3,000 pounds. Before they could catch the mammoth shark, however, it spit out the hook and swam away.

According to his Facebook post, Michalove was disappointed and nearly called it a day, but decided to give it another shot after a short rest.

Another great white, this time male, soon came biting; and though not as massive as the first one, was still relatively large at nine and a half feet long.

After a bit of a struggle, the crew finally caught the shark, put an acoustic tag on him, and sent him on his merry way.

Tags typically stay on for seven years, and provide scientists with helpful data to study and protect the majestic predators.

All in all, it was a very productive day for Michalove and his crew. Still, the fisherman can’t help but pine for the one that got away.
