U.S. Issues Sanctions Over Russia’s Activities Against Ukraine

The U.S. Department of Treasury announced in a press release on Tuesday that seven individuals and eight entities have been named in sanctions related to Russia’s takeover of Crimea from the Ukraine.

The United States government has issued sanctions against those accused of trying to breach restrictions placed on Russia after its 2014 takeover of Crimea from Ukraine, reports Reuters.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of the Treasury stated that the “...Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today designated seven individuals and eight entities under two Executive orders...related to Russia and Ukraine, and identified two vessels as blocked property.”
The release went on to say, “This action underscores the U.S. government’s opposition to Russia’s occupation of Crimea and our firm refusal to recognize its attempted annexation of the peninsula.”
Six of the men are said to be executives affiliated with a bank which was designated two years ago for its connections with top Russian insiders.
Meanwhile, a seventh man, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, is accused of working with the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense and having links to the country’s military plans against Ukraine.
The sanctions also apply to four companies which the U.S. government says “operate in the Crimea region of Ukraine.”
Acting OFAC Director John E. Smith is quoted as saying, in part, that “These targeted sanctions aim to maintain pressure on Russia by sustaining the costs of its occupation of Crimea and disrupting the activities of those who support the violence and instability in Ukraine.”
According to Reuters, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has reportedly indicated that they believe these actions are tied to the forthcoming change in the U.S. administration and have threatened retaliatory sanctions.
