President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser is reportedly raising some concerns because of the retired Army officer's controversial views on Islam.
At a conference for self-described national security group ACT for America, Flynn is quoted as saying, “Islam is a political ideology…it definitely hides behind this notion of it being a religion. It’s like cancer…a malignant cancer in this case.”
He has also tweeted that “Fear of Muslims is RATIONAL.”
Flynn, a registered Democrat, is believed to have been pushed out of the Defense Intelligence Agency two years ago, notes ABC News.
During the recent presidential election, the lieutenant general counseled Trump on security affairs and even spoke at the Republican National Convention.
In a statement, the president-elect has stated, “I am pleased that Lieutenant General Michael Flynn will be by my side as we work to defeat radical Islamic terrorism, navigate geopolitical challenges and keep Americans safe at home and abroad.”
Meanwhile, Muslims in America are said to be concerned about the effect his appointment may have on them.
