Cows on quake island: New Zealand earthquake leaves three cows stranded on patch of land - TomoNews

KAIKOURA, NEW ZEALAND — The devastating quake that struck New Zealand’s South Island left three cows in a very troublesome predicament.

On November 14, the small east coast town of Kaikoura was hit with the 7.8-magnitude earthquake just after midnight. The earthquake caused only two human casualties, but stranded roughly a thousand tourists, hundreds of residents, and plenty of frightened animals.

With farmland falling all around them within seconds, three cows — two adult beef cows and a small calf – found themselves suddenly 20 feet above ground. With some help, the farmer who owns the property was able to rescue them, along with 11 other cows in the group.

While waiting to be saved, a news helicopter flew by and spotted the cows on the island. The reporters estimated the island was about 50m by 80m across. Footage of the cows has now gone viral online.
