Amazing footage has emerged of a group of mountaineers being assisted by a stray dog as they descend Mount Kazbek in Georgia.

According to the filmer, the dog was initially spotted by the group as they ascended the 5,033 metre high mountain.

It then began walking back down with them as they made their descent, helping to spot hidden crevasses in the snow.

"I have to admit, it was a perfect dog for mountaineering," the filmer wrote online.

Sadly, after helping the group down the slope, the the dog became trapped down one of the crevasses.

"Unfortunately, when almost all of the crevasses were behind our back, the dog has suddenly disappeared," he said.

"And then, when jumping above one of the very deep crevasses, I have heard the poor dog's crying from the abyss below my feet. And there was nothing we could do to get him out of the deadly trouble. Poor frozen dog," he added.
