The sad story of the dog who disappeared on a mountain at 5,000 metres

Incredible footage of a group of mountaineers climbing down Mount Kazbek with the help of a dog.

The video, filmed in August, shows the animal making its way across treacherous ground discovering crevasses for the climbers.

Sadly, the dog - who didn't belong to any of the climbers - disappeared down a hole during the descent and the filmer doesn't know if he survived.

"After reaching the summit, we have met this dog again and from that moment he was going down with us, playing with snow," the filmer wrote online.

"I have to admit, it was a perfect dog for mountaineering as he was finding crevasses (even those hidden under the snow) and showing them to us, so I have found him very useful.

"Unfortunately, when almost all of the crevasses were behind our back, the dog has suddenly disappeared... And then, when jumping above one of the very deep crevasses, I heard the poor dog's crying from the abyss below my feet, and there was nothing we could do to get him out of the deadly trouble.

"However, there might be also some light in this sad story, because after our return from Georgia, one of my climbing mates has spoken to the member of Polish rescue team, who was at the same time in the Kazbek Base Camp. So once she shown a photo of the dog to that rescue guy, surprisingly, he said he saw this dog in the BC shortly after we have left the mountain (means on another day or the day after another).

"From my perspective, there are many similarly looking dogs there in Caucasus mountains, so I am afraid we will never be entirely sure whether that guy really saw 'our' dog, who in such case would somehow have to manage to get out of the hole by himself, or just some other dog searching for food in the Base Camp.

"Anyway, there is a spark of hope the dog is there and still alive helping others to climb the mountain safely."
