A judge in Mexico who oversaw appeals in some high-profile cases, including that of drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been killed, reports The Independent.
Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias was reportedly jogging outside his home on Monday when he was shot in the head.
Video footage of the purported assassination is believed to show a darkly clothed person approaching the judge from behind then shooting him at point-blank range before fleeing.
The victim is said to have died on his way to the hospital, notes the Daily Mail.
Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has since announced that the investigation into the judge’s death will be spearheaded by the attorney general’s office.
No motive has been revealed thus far, but the federal official had provided decisions on cases involving prominent drug lords like Guzman and a former cartel boss Miguel Treviño.
