Queen Elizabeth II Is Now World’s Longest-Serving Monarch

Queen Elizabeth II has become the longest-serving monarch in the world since the previous record-holder, Thailand’s king Bhumibol Adulyadej, has died after reigning for 70 years.

The death of Thailand’s king has enabled Queen Elizabeth II to claim the record of longest-serving monarch in the world.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej died on Thursday at 88-years old, with the palace confirming the loss in a statement saying, “His Majesty has passed away at Siriraj Hospital peacefully.”

His reign began 70 years ago in 1946, and, during this time, he was largely heralded as a national demigod.

Now that he has passed, his record falls to Queen Elizabeth II, who, at age 90, has reigned for almost 65 years; she secured the domestic title of longest-ruling U.K. sovereign from her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria last year.

USA Today reports that the global monarchs who trail her are the Sultan of Brunei who has been governing for 49 years and the Sultan of Oman who has been serving for 46 years.
