QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA — It’s been over two years since then 26-year-old Warriena Tagpuno Wright fell to her death from the 14th floor of an apartment building in Queensland, Australia. This week, the man accused of causing her fall, Gable Tostee, is in court.

Tostee has pleaded not guilty to the alleged homicide that occurred in August 2014. The now 30-year-old was living in the Avalon Apartments, a high-rise building off the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise at the time of the incident.

According to investigations conducted by the Queensland Police Service, on Aug. 1, Tostee and Wright, from New Zealand, connected on Tinder. Tostee and Wright, who was on a two-week vacation in the area, decided to meet a week later. The pair bought beer from a local shop then went to Tostee’s 14th floor apartment.

A recording from Tostee’s phone gave hints as to what happened that night. It revealed the pair had a fight, during which Tostee accused Wright of being abusive and telling her to stop “beating him up” and that she is not his “kind of girl.” He at one point said, “You are lucky I haven't chucked you off my balcony you goddamn psycho little bitch.”

A struggle ensues and then Tostee tells Wright that he is kicking her out saying, “You have to leave.”

Sounds of a door can be heard when Tostee locks Wright out on the balcony. Wright could be heard saying, “No,” multiple times. Tostee asks her why she tried to hit him with something. Then Wright could be heard begging for Tostee to let her go home. A faint scream can be heard before Tostee says, “Sh*t.” Afterward, no other recording of Wright could be heard.

Tostee is heard leaving the apartment and calling his father. He tells him, “I met up with a girl for a date ... she started getting really aggressive. We had sex in bed and then after that she kept drinking.”

He continues saying, “I think she might’ve jumped off ... there’s like a million cops. I’m fucked, I don’t know what to do. I didn’t cause this, I didn’t push her or anything.”
When police arrive on the scene, Tostee’s apartment is vacant. Tostee was later contacted and interviewed by police, and subsequently arrested.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Wright had no choice but to jump in order to escape Tostee, while defense attorneys said that Tostee was in his right to defend himself against the woman.

Of the three hours of audio taken from Tostee’s phone, the court heard only one hour. The trail is expected to take place over seven to eight days.
