Live donor uterus transplants have officially come to the United States.

Live donor uterus transplants have officially come to the United States.

Between September 14th and 22nd, 4 women who were born without the reproductive organs underwent the procedure at the Baylor University Medical Center in Texas.

3 of the patients did not experience the needed blood flow to the implanted uterus and had to have the organ removed.

The 4th is said to be responding well, but success is not yet assured.

If the transplant takes, she should be able to become pregnant within the coming year, but special measures will be required.

As the procedure does not involve connecting the uterus to ovaries, in vitro fertilization is needed. Also, the uterus itself is quite delicate, necessitating birth via C-section.

Experts hailing from Sweden, where the transplants have brought successful results a number of times, were present for the surgeries.

They and the doctors from the Baylor University Medical Center are reviewing the cases in which the organs required removal to determine how such loss can be avoided in the future.
