China to build its own nuclear reactor in the UK after Hinkley Point project approved

BEIJING — China’s investment in the approved Hinkley Point nuclear power station project may mean that it could build its own nuclear reactor in the UK.

According to the Guardian, China will own 33% of the Hinkley Point C project in return to build its self-developed Hualong One reactor in Bradwell, Essex.

Hualong One is a third generation pressurized water reactor that is designed to last at last at least 60 years. Its reactor core has 177 fuel assemblies, with a thermal power output of 3060 MWt. The reactor building is protected by two layers of walls; the inner wall contains a steel lining and the outer wall is designed to be strong enough to withstand the impact of a large commercial plane crash.

China aims to export its nuclear reactors worldwide with its Hualong One reactor being sold in Pakistan, Argentina and Romania.
