The team jumped out to a 20-0 lead then had to hold on late for the win. As usual the defense led them to victory by limiting the Bulldogs to 270 offensive yards with 1.8 yards per carry average on the ground on 32 carries. Mississippi St was an anemic 1 of 14 on third down. Quarterback Danny Etling connected on 19 of 30 throws for 215 yards and a touchdown. Running back Leonard Fournette rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns on his 28 carries. LSU has a week one defeat to Wisconsin losing 16-14 as a -12 ½ point favorite.

Auburn fell to 1-2 on the 2016 campaign with the 29-16 home defeat to the Texas A&M Aggies as a -1 point favorite. The total went under 55 ½ points. The offense failed to sustain drives in defeat going 6 of 17 on third down conversions. They finished just shy of 400 offensive yards with 236 on the ground on 54 carries. Sean White connected on 18 of 27 throws for 126 yards. Defensively was a mixed bag. Auburn was good getting off the field on third down limiting the Aggies to 2 of 15 conversions but Texas A&M gathered 231 rushing yards and ran for 6.2 yards per carry.
