FOREST FALLS, CALIFORNIA — When a woman in small California mountain community was forced to kill a bear to protect her family, it was the bear that got sympathy.

KABC reports that the 400-pound male black bear had broken into Julie Strauja’s house in Forest Falls three days in a row.

It came in through the bathroom window one night and broke into the kitchen the next morning, where it scared her three children and injured the family dog.

Worried for her kids’ safety, Strauja got a permit to shoot and kill the bear if it ever came back. It reappeared just a day later, and Strauja had a hunter friend shoot it as it charged toward her house.

Though she reportedly doesn’t regret her actions, neighbors in the small town are not pleased that she killed the animal. She has received threats and angry comments, with one very angry resident even posting her address on Facebook and inviting people to make her life hell, according to the San Bernardino Sun.
