Leicester City v Manchester United, 2016 Community Shield preview
The last time Jose Mourinho faced Claudio Ranieri – the man he infamously replaced as Chelsea boss in 2004 – he was sacked by Chelsea the following morning. Given the history between the two managers, it’s somewhat fitting that Mourinho’s first competitive match as manager of Manchester United comes against Ranieri.
In the Premier League era, the champions have taken home the shield on 15 out of 23 occasions. In more than 60% of Community Shield fixtures since 1992, the winning side has gone on to finish higher in the league than their opponents – as was the case last season when Arsenal finished above Chelsea.
Leicester come into the match on the back of a 4-2 defeat to Barcelona in Sweden. New signing Ahmed Musa came on at half time to net a brace. Manchester United, meanwhile, played out a goalless draw with Everton on Wednesday evening for Wayne Rooney’s testimonial.

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United
Manchester United look a much-changed side from the one we saw last season. Jose Mourinho is set to give Rooney a more advanced role in the side, likely behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be deployed on the right of a front three, with Anthony Martial playing on the left. It is still unclear who Mourinho favours in central midfield, although we suspect Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin are ahead of Marouane Fellaini in the pecking order.
While Mourinho aims to rebuild United, his Italian counterpart is doing his best to keep his Leicester side together. The Foxes will no doubt have the advantage of familiarity over Manchester United, who may require a couple of games to properly gel under their new manager. This, despite a summer full of disruption and distraction.
Jamie Vardy turned down the chance to join Arsenal, who are still interested in signing Riyad Mahrez. For now, the duo remain at the King Power, but the club were powerless in preventing midfield kingpin N’Golo Kante from moving to Chelsea.
