The Newark, New Jersey branch of the Associated Humane Societies rescued two dogs, burned and covered with tar, from a hot roof on Friday.
When workers arrived, the animals, a Yorkie and a pit bull, were in dire condition, with one running from side to side trying to find a cool place to rest and the other almost too distraught to move.
Temperatures that day reached 96 degrees melting the tar on the roof and burning the poor dogs.
In a statement, the Associated Humane Societies noted, "No one was at home at the residence and while there were trays of chicken legs and rice on the roof, there was not a drop of water in sight. Feces covered the roof as well so apparently, this is where these poor dogs live."
The canines were rushed to an area veterinary hospital, where they remain under treatment.
While their conditions have improved and they are no longer in pain, the two will need additional recovery time.
The Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter has assumed responsibility for covering the cost of the dogs’ care and is welcoming donations.
Authorities are still looking for the dogs' owners.
