On March 18, an E-2C Hawkeye was attempting to land on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower when a cable malfunction prevented the plane from stopping, reports The Aviationist‎.
As a recently released video shows, the pilots were able to keep the aircraft from going into the water by accelerating and pulling up, but the incident was not without injuries to those on deck.
An investigation revealed the equipment issue was a result of human error, notes The Virginian-Pilot.
In preparing the cable to slow the plane, personnel failed to properly execute all of the steps.
However, the fault is not placed with them, as the operation instructions were deemed to be insufficient, and, “…the sailors involved reasonably believed they had properly and conscientiously completed the complicated procedure.”
Eight sailors on the deck were injured in the incident.
