GOA, INDIA — Video of a boat carrying a local mayor capsizing has gone viral on social media. And now the mayor is being blamed for the incident.

The boat, which was traveling along St. Inez Creek in Panaji, in the Indian state of Goa, was on a demonstration tour to show off its weed-removing mechanism. Panaji mayor, Surendra Furtado, two journalists and four others were onboard.

Furtado had invited media to witness the mechanical removal of weeds along the banks of the creek, which had swelled during recent monsoon storms and became filled with sewage and trash. Unfortunately, the mechanism became logged in the bank and, instead of removing weeds and debris, toppled and flipped the boat over, throwing its passengers into the sewer water.

Furtado was dragged under the boat, but he and everyone else escaped unharmed.

Following the incident, a police complaint was filed against Furtado. Social activist Aires Rodrigues filed the complaint stating that despite being warned, Furtado and others overloaded the boat, which led to it capsizing.
