Kidney Patients With High Salt Diets at Greater Risk of Heart Attack or Stroke

A new study suggests that people with chronic kidney disease face higher odds of heart attack or stroke if they have a food diet containing a lot of salt. The study was led by Dr. Jiang He, of Tulane University in New Orleans. Dr. He said, "Moderate sodium reduction among patients with chronic kidney disease and high sodium intake may lower heart risk." The researchers also noted that about one in every 10 Americans is affected by chronic kidney disease, and more than one-third of U.S. adults have heart disease. According to UPI, the study couldn't prove cause and effect. However, the findings showed that subjects who scored in the highest 25 percent in terms of daily sodium intake had significantly higher rates of key cardiac events. The findings were published May 24 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
