Malaysia fires immigration officers for deliberately disabling airport systems

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — Malaysia’s immigration authority is under scrutiny after it emerged some of its officials may have deliberately allowed some travellers to bypass criminal background checks.

According to the BBC, 15 Malaysian immigration officers were fired this week over allegations that they helped sabotaged the country’s Interpol-linked immigration system.
ABC Australia reports they are in police custody.

Authorities suspect the officials incapacitated the system to let people skip computer operated criminal background checks, and pass through manual passport screening instead.

Authorities say that as many 100 officials may have been involved in the operation.
Those fired had reportedly served for between six months and 15 years, reported the Anadolu Agency.
