KOH SAMUI, THAILAND — Two female tourists were killed when a speedboat overturned in rough waters in southern Thailand on Thursday afternoon.

The boat was reportedly hit by a large wave that capsized it at around 5:00 p.m. local time as it traveled between Mu Ko Ang National Park and Lomprayah Pier on the island of Koh Samui.

The boat was packed with a total of 36 passengers, including 31 foreigners. Four of the passengers were staff members, the Bangkok Post reported.

A British woman and a woman from Hong Kong died, while two other passengers remained missing. It was believed that both women died after becoming trapped underwater, the Sun reported, citing local reports.

Some survivors were quickly picked up by a passing speedboat, while others were rescued later by an official rescue boat, the Bangkok Post reported. Most of the passengers sustained injuries.

The surf was rough at the time of the incident, Thai officials told the media.
