VA Gov. Terry McAuliffe under federal investigation for campaign contributions

Virginia Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department’s public integrity unit.
The investigation, which has gone on for at least a year, focused on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law.
Among the McAuliffe donations that are being examined was $120,000 from Chinese businessman Wang Wenliang through his U.S. businesses.
U.S. election law prohibits foreign nationals from donating to the federal, state or local elections.
Penalties for violations include fines and/or imprisonment.
However, Wang holds U.S. permanent resident status, which would make him a U.S. person under election law and eligible to donate to McAuliffe’s campaign.
Officials say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
