New research could shed light on the continuing debate about the role of diet versus exercise in weight management. 

According to a New York Times article, many experts believe that physical activity can cause people, especially the obese, to eat more or move less otherwise which can both result in weight gain. 

However, a recently published study led by the University of Missouri points out that exercise can influence other weight-related mechanisms like metabolism and intestinal microbes. 

For the study, the team fed three groups of obesity-prone rats “a high-fat diet.”
