North Carolina LGBT law spurs demonstrations, repeal bill

More than fifty people were arrested as tensions ran high when protesters from both sides of the new anti-LGBT laws held competing rallies in North Carolina yesterday.
Hundreds of campaigners had gathered outside the statehouse yesterday in protest against the new legislation which prohibits transgender people from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with.
The law, passed last month in a special session, also strips lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of their state protections.
Republican legislative leaders have expressed no interest in overturning the new law and insist transgender people must use multi-stall restrooms that align with their gender at birth.
