Giant beached fin whale in Mexico

Footage of a dead, beached fin whale off the coast of Yucatán in Mexico.

The video, filmed on March 29, shows the five-tonne, 13-metre-long carcass lying next to the sea, after it was brought in by fishermen.

The filmer later wrote online: "Most of the whales inhabit in deep waters due to it's size.

"The coastal shelf on Yucatan's peninsula is cursory and very extensive, which is why they are not often seen."

"Most of the information about marine mammals comes from strandings," he continued.

"When a whale is very sick or weak, it no longer has the energy to stay afloat and beached whales often die due to dehydration, the body collapsing under its own weight, or drowning when high tide covers their blowhole."
