ISIS flag, ammo found in Brussels apartment linked to Paris attacks

BRUSSELS —Two suspects linked to last year's Paris attacks are the subjects of an intensive manhunt after an hours-long raid of an apartment near Brussels on Tuesday afternoon.

Two men are on the run after six Belgian and French police officers stormed a supposedly empty apartment in a Brussels suburb on Tuesday. The police had expected it to be a routine search of the flat, whose electricity and water had been cut off, reported the Guardian.

Immediately after police entered the apartment, at least two gunmen inside shot at the officers with automatic rifles.

Three officers were hurt in the initial raid while another officer was injured during a second shootout, reported France24.

One of the gunmen, 35-year-old Algerian Belkhaid Mohammad, was shot by a special forces sniper when he tried to open fire at police through a window. Mohammad's body was discovered next to a Kalashnikov rifle, a Salafist book and an ISIS flag. Police also found 11 loaded Kalashnikov magazines and numerous shell casings inside the apartment.

Two other suspects from the raided apartment were able to flee via the building's rooftop. Two people were detained later on Tuesday, but both have been released without charge after police determined neither were the wanted suspects. According to France24, the two missing suspects are brothers with links to terrorism, however, there are few other details available about them.
