Mom and baby rescued from sinking car by heroic passersby in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM — A mother and her baby were heroically rescued from a sinking vehicle moments before it plunged to the bottom of a canal.

Four men saved the two after their car crashed into the Schinkel River canal last Tuesday.

The mother had parked her car and just gotten out of the vehicle when it started moving again, with her baby still in the back seat, a fire department spokesperson said.

She was able to get back into the car, but could not stop it from plunging into the water.

Three bystanders who witnessed the incident dived into the water and swam out to the vehicle. One of the men tried to break one of the car windows with a stone.

A fourth bystander then jumped into the water after grabbing a hammer from his car.

They were finally able to break through one of the windows and pull the pair out.

Emergency crews arrived quickly on scene.

The two were taken to the hospital, but were doing well, the spokesperson said.

Firefighters have since pulled the car out of the canal.
