Escaped California inmate surrenders to police after a week on the run

SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA — After escaping from the Orange County Men's Central Jail a week ago, one of three escapees contacted police and turned himself in on Friday, police have announced. Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens told a press conference that 43-year-old Bac Duong gave himself up by asking a pedestrian in Santa Ana to call the police before noon on Friday.

Duong had been on the run since he escaped from the Orange county Men's Central Jail on January 22.

On Thursday, police arrested Nooshafarin Ravaghi, a teacher at the jail who they say showed escapee Hossein Nayeri Google Maps of the jail's roof. Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeff Hallock told reporters earlier on Friday that Ravaghi and Nayeri had exchanged handwritten notes of a personal nature outside of class.

Then, on January 22, Hossein Nayeri, Bac Duong, and Jonathan Tieu cut through a grate to access an unsecured part of the jail's roof. Using a rope made of bed sheets they were able to climb four storeys to ground.

On January 23, Bac Duong arranged to test drive a white utility van, which he then stole. The three men were believed to be living in the van in California. After Bac Duong surrendered himself in Santa Ana on Friday, police said they believe Nayeri and Tieu may be in San Jose, possibly headed to Fresno.

All three men had been charged with violent crimes. Sheriff's Lieutenant Hallock told reporters Duong and Tieu are both reputed to have connections to Vietnamese-American street gangs.
