ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — One of three inmates who escaped from a maximum-security jail in Southern California last week has surrendered.

Bac Duong, 43, turned himself in and was arrested at 11:45 a.m. in Santa Ana.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Braun said he surrendered "because of the pressure that was being put on him by the general community."

Duong broke out of Orange County Men's Central Jail in Santa Ana on Jan. 22 with Hossein Nayeri, 37, and Jonathan Tieu, 20.

A community college instructor, Nooshafarin Ravaghi, 44, who taught English as a Second Language classes at the jail was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 28. Ravaghi is under suspicion for assisting the escapees by giving them access to Google Maps, which included information about the jail rooftop and surrounding areas.

Nayeri, who was committed for the 2012 mutilation and torture of a kidnap victim, is presumed the mastermind of the breakout. He befriended Ravaghi and the pair exchanged hand-written letters outside of class.

Duong and Tieu are said to be connected with Vietnamese-American street gangs. Tieu has been convicted of murder charges, and Duong for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, among other charges.

The inmates used tools to cut through security bars in a plumbing tunnel and into air vents. They then used braided sheets to rappel down four to five stories from the roof the jail.

The three escapees stole a white GMC van for sale the following day when Duong took it on a test drive.

Nayeri and Tieu are still on the run. The van is still missing. Police are offering a $200,000 reward for information leading up to the capture of the inmates.
