BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA — Authorities have recovered footage from a GoPro camera that may help piece together what happened to two BASE jumpers who may have drowned in the Pacific after parachuting off a California bridge.

The Monterey Herald reports that around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Katie Connell and an unidentified male friend went to Big Sur to BASE jump off Bixby Bridge.

The video from the GoPro shows that Connell went first, jumping roughly 260 feet down from the concrete guardrail at the center of the bridge. She landed safely, but was engulfed by several large waves and disappeared into the surf in a matter of seconds.

The man, seeing this, jumped from the bridge to go after her. Taking off his parachute and helmet, he dived into the water in an attempt to save Connell.

Police learned about the accident on Saturday afternoon, after inspecting the pair's rental car, which had been left near the bridge. A dive team was deployed to search the waters on Monday morning, but rescuers have not yet found the couple and fear the two may be dead, according to the Monterey County Weekly.

Officials say there are no plans to release the GoPro video, per the request of Connell's family. They have also not disclosed the man's identity, pending notification of next of kin.
