EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA — An investigation is underway for an officer-related shooting that killed a woman and a dog in a stolen car after the driver allegedly tried to run the officer over.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that officers in El Cajon spotted a stolen red Toyota compact on Main Street around 1:25 a.m. on Saturday. They attempted to pull it over, but the vehicle sped away.

A car chase ensued, with the Toyota reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.

The pursuit led to a cul-de-sac on Pierce Street, where the driver made a u-turn and was met with several police cars.

An officer got out to try and talk to the driver, but the car sped towards him. Fearing for his life, the officer fired four shots at the vehicle, which continued ramming the police cars before eventually stopping.

An unidentified female passenger and a dog were killed as a result of the gunfire. The driver was arrested for suspicion of attempted murder and felony evading while two male passengers were taken in for drug-related offenses.

The officer who fired the shots is a three year veteran on the police force.
