Amitabh Bachchan - Biography

Amitabh Bachchan, who was born on 11th Oct 1942 at Allahabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is an Indian film actor/ producer/ play back singer/ narrator. Amitabh Bachchan is the son of renowned Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. As India was struggling for independence during that period he was named ‘Inquilab’ by his father but later on his name was changed to Amitabh- which means- the light which will never goes off- and it has been proved in the true sense.

Amitabh Bachchan is married to actress Jaya Bachchan whom he met on the sets of a movie Guddi and has two children, son Abhishek Bachchan, an actor, and daughter Shweta Bachchan. He is a grand pa too.

Amitabh Bachchan was working in a company Birds & Co in Calcutta as freight broker and decided to quit his job and take up acting as his career. In 969, he did voice narration for a cult Bengali film Bhuvan Shome which was highly acclaimed by the critics and won national award for the best film and fetched Amitabh Bachchan a role in a K Abbas film- Saat Hindustani and he won a national award for the best actor.

The journey from Saat Hindustani has not ended yet and he has till date worked in 180 movies and still many more to come.

In his illustrious career he has won 3 national awards and 14 film fare awards and has been nominated 37 times in different categories. He has worked in Hindi, Bhojpuri, Malayalam and English cinema. He has been awarded with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the government for his contribution to the Indian cinema.

His association with Hrishikesh Mukerjee was a turning point in his career and made meaning full simple films like Anand, where he was pitted against super star but still managed to win filmfare award, and Abhiman, Chupke Chupke a cult comic movie, Namak Haram, Mili etc.

In 1973 he worked in Zanjeer and had the image of angry young man and he continued to play these characters in movies like Deewar, Kala Pathar, Muqqqadar Ka Sikander, Kaalia, Trishul, Sharaabi, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Shakti, And A Romantic Hit Kabhi Kabhi, and many more movies.

Two films stand out in his illustrious career- Sholay, where his character of a silent lover and a friend was much appreciated and this movie broke all time records in terms of business collections. In the year 1982, he was injured during the shooting of a movie Coolie and was fighting for his life in a hospital in Mumbai, millions of fans prayed for him and he recovered soon. The shot was freezed in the movie and the ending was changed looking at the sentiments of the people, as the script was changed and Amitabh’s character does not die in the end.

He was also involved in politics to help his good friend Rajiv Gandhi and won electioned from Allahabad by record number of votes, but he was disillusioned by the dirt politics and resigned and quit.

He started a production and event management company - ABCL- but ran in to huge losses and was on the verge of being declared bankrupt, but then came Kuan Banega Crorepati and the amounts he earned from this television show were used to wipe out all his debts. He was a free man again.

His shows Kuan Banega Crorepati and Big Boss were very big hits because of his warm, causal, decent way of hosting these shows.

In the year 2000 he returned to acting again doing films like Mohabbatien, Bunty Aur Bubly, Khaake, Dev, Black, Sarkar Raj, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and many other movies.

His son is running his production house -AB CORP and made hit movies like Cheeni Kum and Paa.

Amitabh is working on few new projects like- Taalisman and The Great Batsy.
Although he is known to be a family man, his steamy affair with the legendary star Rekha still raises many eyebrows and had created a furvour in the entire film fraternity, the repercussions of which can be felt in the present day also.
