ORANGE, MASSACHUSETTS — Orange Massachusetts police responded to a medical emergency call Tuesday and found themselves entrenched in a real-life "Lassie" story.

According a Facebook post by the police department, officers were responding to a call that required the transportation of a female resident to the hospital. While on the call, officers noticed two white Scottish terriers in the woman's yard.

The officers tried to catch the dogs, but they escaped into the wooded area surrounding the house. Officer Chris Bisceglia, who was on the scene, drove around the area in search of the dogs. One of the dogs approached the officer and signaled him to follow.

The dog led Bisceglia through a field to an embankment off Jones Cemetery Road, where 30 feet below, the second dog was trapped, entangled in overgrowth.

The officer quickly called in the incident, and the local fire department was able to reach the trapped dog using a ground ladder. Fireman James Hopkins freed the dog and carried her back up the embankment to safety.

Following the event, the police department posted the story on Facebook stating, "Apparently, any dog in the right circumstance can turn into 'Lassie'!"

The brave terrier, 5-year-old Jock and his canine companion, Annibell were checked out by veterinarians immediately following the dramatic rescue. Annibell suffered only minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
