Mexican mayor shot dead during first day on the job

TEMIXCO, MEXICO — Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a newly inaugurated mayor central in Mexico.
On Saturday morning, armed gunmen stormed Mayor Gisela Mota's home in Temixco, Mexico. The gunmen reportedly beat her and shot her in the head, reported the New York Daily News citing El Economista. Her attackers then fled the scene in a van and exchanged fire with pursuing police. Two gunmen were killed during the chase and three others, including a minor, were arrested, reported the Los Angeles Times.
Mota was attacked less than 24 hours after being sworn in as Mayor of Temixco in Mexico's Morelos state. She was a former federal congresswoman and belonged to the leftist Democratic Revolution Party and was sworn in on January 1, reported Telesur.
Citing Mexican newspaper El Universal, the Los Angeles Times reported the assassination is connected to a drug gang named Los Rojos, which in English means the Red. One of the suspects told authorities they were paid 500,000 Mexican pesos — about $29,000 — to kill Mota.
"One theory could be that it was a warning to the other mayors," Ramon Castro Castro, Roman Catholic bishop of Cuernavaca, said to reporters. "If you don't co-operate with organized crime, look at what will happen to you. It's to scare them."
Citing a statement from the local prosecutor's office, the Los Angeles Times reported that authorities recovered bulletproof vests, balaclavas, a 9mm pistol, an Uzi rifle and various types of ammunition from the attackers' car.
Temixco has seen high levels of drug-related violence, kidnappings and extortion in recent years. The death of Mota raises the amount of local elected officials murdered in Mexico over the last ten years to nearly 100, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing the Association of Local Authorities of Mexico — an organization representing Mexican mayors.
