Craving for pizza led to capture of fugitive 'affluenza teen' in Mexico
  • 8 years ago
PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO — Fugitive "affluenza teen" Ethan Couch was caught in Mexico following a two-week worldwide manhunt after a phone call for a pizza delivery, authorities have revealed.

Couch, 18, and his mother Tonya were detained after they used one of their phones to make an order from Domino's Pizza, the Guardian reported, citing Mexican authorities.

The pair were traced to a shabby $350-dollar a month apartment in the Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta, CBSDFW reported.

They were detained at a nearby intersection when they tried to cross the street.

Couch admitted killing four people in a drunk-driving accident in 2013. His lawyer's defense was that the teenager was so wealthy he had "affluenza" and therefore could not distinguish right from wrong.

Couch and his mother disappeared two weeks ago after video appeared on social media of him apparently violating the terms of his parole by drinking alcohol. His probation terms state that he cannot drink, drive or do drugs.

Anderson said the pair planned their escape, made attempts to change their appearance and did not use credit cards to avoid detection while in Mexico, the Guardian reported.

Affluenza is not a recognized condition, according to the American Psychiatric Association.
