'Affluenza' teen fugitive arrested with his mother in Mexico

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO — Ethan Couch, the Texas teen involved in the infamous "affluenza" crash, was arrested with his mother in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on Monday.

Couch, now 18, made headlines two years ago after he received probation for killing four people in a drunk driving accident because his defense argued that he had been too spoiled by his wealthy parents to know right from wrong.

He was sentenced to only 10 years of probation after being found guilty on four counts of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault while driving drunk in June of 2013.

Footage of Couch at a party where beer appears have been served was posted on Twitter on Dec. 2. His probation terms state that he cannot drink, drive or do drugs.

A warrant for his arrest for violating the terms of his probation was issued after Couch missed a scheduled meeting with his probation officer on Dec. 11.

Couch and his mother Tonya Couch, 48, were arrested in the December 5th neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta around 6 p.m. on Monday.

According to a statement from the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office cited by Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA, the fugitives were "handed over to the authorities of the National Institute of Immigration for not evidencing their lawful stay in Mexico. These authorities will send them in return to their country of origin."

Affluenza is not a recognized condition according to the American Psychiatric Association.
