America's biggest shopping mall seeks restraining order against Black Lives Matter

MINNEAPOLIS — America's biggest shopping mall has had enough of Black Lives Matter.

The Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota is seeking a temporary restraining order against local Black Lives leaders in the hope of preventing a planned protest over the recent police shooting death of unarmed black man, 24-year-old Jamar Clark.

The mall hopes hopes leaders Michael McDowell, Miski Noor, Lena Gardner, and Kandace Montgomery, as well as four other people, from entering the mall on December 23 will prevent a disruptive activity, which on Dec. 20 last year saw mall traffic fall by an estimated 24,000 shoppers, KARE 11 reports.

The Mall of America isn't a public square or city street. It's a private place of business, and the movement's plan to fill it with angry people by rallying support on social media is unreasonable.

The mall says it supports the movement's aims but is upset activists intend to use it as their personal soapbox while disrupting commerce.

"This is not about free speech. This is not about whether or not these folks have a good cause. Of course they have a good cause. this about where you demonstrate. And you demonstrate in places like this, in a courthouse", attorney for Mall of America Susan Gaertner said.

If the order is granted, the mall wants the planned protest's leaders to post the notice on social media, warning protesters they'll be trespassing and subject to arrest.

Activist leaders say this amounts to an attack on their freedom of speech and right of assembly. But they're on thin legal ground, given it's not public property.

The plan to occupy the mall is bullying behavior. It harms retailers and shoppers who had nothing to do with Jamar Clark's death and who may feel equally outraged at police violence against African-Americans.

What's more, it's bad strategy. The movement risks looking less to middle America like a broad-based social justice movement and more like a militant activist group.

The cry-bullies in Black Lives Matter seem intent on harassing as many people as possible until they get their way, even if it means Santa won't come for some kids this year.
