Blade-wielding madman wearing surgical mask slashes 16-year-old girl's throat

NEW YORK — A blade-wielding maniac brutally assaulted an unlucky Queens, New York teen of Chinese descent on Wednesday morning. The teenager was on her way to school when she was attacked.
The 16-year-old Chinese exchange student was walking to school at around 8:15 a.m. when a man wearing a surgical mask and gloves ran up to her from behind and assaulted her. According to ABC7, he pushed the teen to the ground and slashed her with a box cutter.
The student was hospitalized and treated for a large gash stretching from her ear to the middle of her throat, as well as another gash in her left cheek.
The randomness of the assault has prompted concerns among many in the Chinese community, some of whom are worried the incident was racially motivated, reported the New York Post.
Local residents told the New York Post that there is a homeless man in the area that often threatens passersby. It's not clear whether he had anything to do with the attack.
