LONDON — Plans have been unveiled for the construction of the tallest building in the City of London, the financial district of the United Kingdom's capital.

The 73-floor skyscraper, called 1 Undershaft, will rise to 309.6 metres, which is the same height as the current tallest building in London, the Shard. The building is intended to provide quality office space, CNN reported.

"1 Undershaft represents the very best of British architecture in a premier location at the heart of London. It will be a building where the public are put first with a new public square at its base and the capital's tallest free public viewing gallery at its top," Architect Eric Parry, whose company designed the building, told CNN.

The official completion date of the building has not been announced yet. According to CNN, it is believed that the building will be put to use within the next decade.
